MEETINGS OF THE CONFERENCES OF THE PARTIES TO THE BASEL, STOCKHOLM AND ROTTERDAM CONVENTIONS

From 6 to 17 June, offline meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions will take place at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG).

The 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention is held in conjunction with the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention and the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention. Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties decided to hold the meetings in two segments: an online segment held on 26‑30 July 2021, focused on adopting a set of prioritized and time sensitive decisions aimed at the continuation of the work of the Convention in 2022, and an offline segment to be held on 6‑17 June 2022 in Geneva.

The theme of the meetings is "Global Agreements for a Healthy Planet: Sound management of chemicals and waste".

During the online segment, interim programmes of work and budgets for the Conventions for 2022 were adopted, the participants agreed to resume the meeting during the offline segment and to continue intersessional work under the Conventions in 2022. In addition, the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention elected members of the recently established Stockholm Convention Effectiveness Evaluation Committee to allow the Committee to initiate the work according to their respective mandates, and agreed to forward the fifth review of the financial mechanism and the report on the assessment of funding needs for the implementation of the Stockholm Convention for the period 2022-2026 to the Global Environment Facility to inform its eighth replenishment.

The online segment of the meetings was attended by over 160 Parties and 1,300 participants. At its offline segment, the meetings will take up the items of the COPs agendas not considered or concluded during the online segment.
